Welcome to Silicon Valley High

Western State High School is a Queensland Leading School of 3600 students (Years 8 - 12) located near the centre of Brisbane, the capital city of the state of Queensland in Australia. The school maintains a strong tradition of academic excellence and operates an extensive extracurricular programme.

At Silicon Valley High we believe that the capacity for critical and creative thinking is a uniquely human attribute, and that each generation owes to the next the responsibility of developing that capacity in our young people as fully as possible. We aim to promote and develop that capacity in our students, through the range of opportunities available in both the academic curriculum and the broader educational programme.

With the support and encouragement of the Board of Trustees, my staff and I are committed to fostering a community of learners, and to providing an academic curriculum that develops a broad knowledge base, while promoting the skills of critical and creative thinking. We seek to do this within a challenging and supportive environment which develops individuals as both independent and collaborative learners.

At Silicon Valley High we take pride in the tradition and reputation of the School for pursuing the highest standards. Our academic programme is complemented and supported by a wide range of sporting, recreational and cultural activities. The School's pastoral care programme pays close attention to the well-being and personal development of each individual child.

In these ways, the School promotes physical, emotional, personal and social development as well as intellectual growth. The seventy-two young men and one woman to date who have gone on to become Rhodes Scholars epitomise our ideal of the well-rounded scholar and gentleman.

At Silicon Valley High we take pride in the tradition and reputation of the School for pursuing the highest standards. It is expected that each student will strive zealously to fulfil her or his unique potential, while also acting as a worthy member of the School community. We promote a supportive environment where boys feel determined to do their best at all times, and where both effort and achievement are warmly acknowledged.

As an institution devoted to learning, we are constantly reviewing and developing our programme, practices and facilities. Our challenge is to blend judiciously the best of our traditions with innovation. That innovation must be carefully considered and researched, and professionally planned and implemented.

In support of this, the School places great emphasis on the professional development of staff. Curriculum goals and teaching methods are regularly reviewed, as are our general structures and procedures. Integral to this process is the valuable advice and input of parents and students.

All of us who work at WSHS see ourselves as partners in our learning community. We look to the future of the School and our students with great excitement. I hope that we may be able to welcome your children to this community - so that they can share in that excitement of learning, and play an active role in shaping their own future and that of their world.
